Here is the single biggest budgeting mistake young founders make: they write down round numbers that feel right instead of listing the actual things they need to buy.

How to Build Your Materials Budget

Step 1: List every single thing you need. Open a blank document and brain-dump. Include ingredients, packaging, tools, marketing materials, software, and anything else. Do not worry about prices yet.

Step 2: Research real prices. Go to the actual websites or shops where you would buy each item. Screenshot or note the price and the supplier. Amazon, Tesco, Hobbycraft, Vistaprint, and eBay are great starting points.

Step 3: Record quantity, unit price, and total. Use a simple table like the ones above. Multiply quantity by unit price to get the total for each line.

Step 4: Add a 10% contingency. Things cost more than you expect. Add 10% to your grand total and label it "contingency / unexpected costs." This is standard practice in real business budgets.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting packaging and delivery costs. If you sell physical products, you need boxes, bags, labels, and potentially postage. These add up quickly.
  • Ignoring "free" tools that have limits. Canva's free tier is great, but if you need to remove backgrounds or resize for print, you might need Pro. Be honest about what you actually need.
  • Listing "marketing" as one line item. Break it down: flyers, social media ads, stickers, business cards, posters. Each one has a real price.
  • Not checking multiple suppliers. Amazon might be £12 for soy wax, but a craft wholesaler might sell it for £8. Five minutes of research can save you pounds.
